The Weekly Stuff Podcast #378 – Batman on Film Part 7: BATMAN BEYOND - RETURN OF THE JOKER (2000) with Will Friedle

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

After going through some big pre-E3 video game news – including events about Dragon Quest, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Horizon: Forbidden West – and some other odds and ends, we dive into Part 7 of our BATMAN ON FILM series, with the 2000 direct-to-video feature Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. Produced by the same team behind the classic Batman: The Animated Series (and earlier film reviewed in this series, Mask of the Phantasm), Batman Beyond broke bold new ground for the caped crusader on television, and this film is no exception. Originally edited for violent content in the wake of the Columbine school shootings before releasing an uncut version a few years later, Return of the Joker is one of the darkest and most brutal Batman outings, but also one of the richest and most rewarding, a story about the past, present, and future of Batman’s world that brings a surprising amount of closure to this incarnation of Batman and the Joker, and cements Will Friedle’s Terry McGinnis as a worthy successor to the cowl.

Enjoy!

Weekly Suit Gundam #31 – MS Igloo and MS Igloo 2 Review & Discussion

It’s time for Weekly Suit Gundam, a show exploring the world of Mobile Suit Gundam from The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman. You can subscribe for free in iTunes by following this link.

This time, we’re taking a detour into one of the most obscure corners of Gundam animation, with the 6-episode CGI OVA MS IGLOO and its 3-episode sequel series MS IGLOO 2: Gravity Well. Originally produced for the Bandai museum in Japan, the first series suffers from repetitive storytelling, thin plotting, and some of the worst 3D CGI animation the early 2000s had to offer, and on its own, there’s not a ton worth saying about it. But the sequel series, produced in 2008, isn’t just a huge step forward in the quality of the CGI production – it’s also a wonderfully unique, compellingly told set of ground-level war stories that make for essential viewing for anyone interested in the One-Year War period of Universal Century Gundam, and is a lot of fun to talk about.

Enjoy, and come back in June for our 2-year anniversary podcast celebration!

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #377 – Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO Review & Discussion

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

It’s another dive into the world of Mobile Suit Gundam this week with MS IGLOO, but before that, you’ll also hear some big personal news from Sean, more discussion of Jason Schreier’s fantastic new book Press Reset, and more Resident Evil talk, including Jonathan’s experience playing Resident Evil Zero for the first time. Then we’re off to one of the most obscure corners of Gundam animation, with the 6-episode CGI OVA MS IGLOO and its 3-episode sequel series MS IGLOO 2: Gravity Well. Originally produced for the Bandai museum in Japan, the first series suffers from repetitive storytelling, thin plotting, and some of the worst 3D CGI animation the early 2000s had to offer, and on its own, there’s not a ton worth saying about it. The Weekly Stuff Podcast #376 – Resident Evil Village & Yakuza: Like a Dragon Spoiler Reviews

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

This week’s super-sized podcast offers two in-depth video game reviews for the price of one, as we break down this month’s outstanding Resident Evil Village and last year’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon – which we’ve both finally finished! – in long spoiler-filled discussions. A fantastic balance of the terrifying and the silly, Resident Evil Village hits the absolute perfect sweet spot for both of us when it comes to this series, and is a total joy to discuss in this format, given how many surprises are hiding around every corner of this extraordinary game. And while Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a very different game, it’s no less fun to talk about, with its rich narrative and wonderful characters, and makes for an especially fun conversation as we’re coming at the series from two different directions – Jonathan as a franchise newbie, and Sean a grizzled Yakuza veteran. Before the reviews, Sean also talks about reading the Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, while Jonathan reviews gaming journalist Jason Schreier’s new book Press Reset, before talking about his very belated playthrough of the excellent Titanfall 2 campaign.

Enjoy!

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #375 – Resident Evil Village Impressions, Dragon Ball News & More!

It’s a fun grab-bag style episode this week as we discuss several pieces of recent news, from the results of the One Piece World Top 100 poll to Sega announcing Yakuza spin-off Lost Judgment to Toei finally confirming a new Dragon Ball Super movie for 2022, before moving on to our first, largely spoiler-free impressions of Resident Evil Village. It’s an outstanding game so far, building on what Resident Evil 7 did so well while also harkening back to entries like Resident Evil 4, and proving itself an incredible artistic and technical showcase along the way. We’ll go into spoiler details next week, but for now, our first impressions are extremely positive. And to finish, Jonathan talks about playing Resident Evil 5 in co-op with his brother, and talks about going to see a bunch of movies in the theater now that he has vaccine superpowers.

Enjoy!

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #374 – Batman on Film Part 6: BATMAN & ROBIN (1997) with George Clooney

After a bit of a delay due to Sean and Jonathan being extremely reluctant to watch the actual movie, our ongoing Batman on Film series is back with the last Batman film of the 90s, and one of the worst movies ever made: Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, a flop that’s just as terrible if not worse than Batman Forever in a whole host of ways, while offering a few improvements thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger and especially Uma Thurman that can’t counteract the awfulness of the main Batman story. It’s an extremely bad movie and a painful, joyless watch, but makes for an entertaining conversation – and the Batman series is definitely looking up from here. We also cover a few pieces of stuff, like Jonathan playing Resident Evil 7 and Sean getting further in Yakuza: Like a Dragon, before paying tribute to the great Shunsuke Kikuchi, composer for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, who passed away this week at the ripe old age of 89, and leaves behind a timeless legacy of incredible, series-defining music.

Enjoy!
