The Season 2 finale of Japanimation Station just finished airing on YouTube, and in case you missed it - which you shouldn’t, it’s a great end to a great season! - we finished the episode by announcing the third season of Japanimation Station, which will be premiering this summer on July 4th, 2023! (Independence Day for those here in the States!)
So let me tell you all about it - and what better way to introduce the next season’s topic than with our official Season Three logo?
That’s right - Season Three of Japanimation Station is called The Classic Adventures of Lupin the 3rd, and it’s all about the original anime adventures of Monkey Punch’s iconic thief. This season starts all the way back with the original “Lupin the 3rd: Part I” anime from 1971, continues with the massive “Part II” anime that aired 155 episodes between 1977-1980, takes a look at the Pink Jacket adventures of “Part III” from 1984, reviews each of the first six movies (including the Hayao Miyazaki classic The Castle of Cagliostro) and several of the character’s best TV specials right up to the turn of the 21st century. In total, we’re surveying the 20th-century output of the Lupin the 3rd franchise, stopping at 2002 with the Episode 0: First Contact special. Jonathan has been Lupin-curious for a long time, having always loved Cagliostro and some other movies and episodes here and there, while Sean is a complete Lupin newbie - so our goal was to create a sort of “Lupin the 3rd 101” course for ourselves, which you are all invited to take part in too!
This season will run 8 episodes, airing in July and August, and we’ll have more details to share soon with the exact breakdown of what we’ll be covering in which episode. But rest assured, it’s going to be a blast - we’ve already recorded much of the season, and it’s some of the most fun we’ve ever had podcasting.
Here’s an additional bit of key art with more details on what we’re reviewing:
But wait! That’s not all! Because in addition to announcing Season Three of Japanimation Station, we also announced Season Four, which will be premiering in late 2023, and will be our longest and most ambitious season to date. Let’s share the (early, in-progress) logo for that season as well:
Season Four is called Japanimation Station’s Kyoto Vacation, and if “Kyoto” plus “Animation” doesn’t mean anything to you, then you’re about to discover a world of great anime, because this season is all about Kyoto Animation - the iconic studio behind works such as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Sound! Euphonium, K-On, Violet Evergarden, and so much more! We will be diving deep with a big slice of their greatest classics, in a season that’s going to run around 20 episodes - by far our biggest undertaking so far! We will announce more details on this season as Season Three comes to a close in August, with a premiere date expected in late Fall or early Winter 2023.
So that’s the news! Pretty exciting, huh? August will also be the one-year anniversary of Japanimation Station, and we’ll be right in the thick of our adventures with Lupin the 3rd when we hit that milestone. There is a lot of great stuff to come, and we’re excited to have you along for the ride!
