Podcast Updates! Our New Series 'Purely Academic' Premieres Next Week!
And some exciting news about Japanimation Station!
Sean Chapman and I have been hard at work on a bunch of exciting podcast projects, so I wanted to drop in with a quick update about where we’re going in September and beyond.
The big news is that Sean and I are launching our brand-new monthly podcast, Purely Academic, one week from today, on Friday, September 6th. Purely Academic is a variety show where we talk about movies and video games, tackle one big topic every month, make silly top ten lists, and much more. It is, in essence, the successor to The Weekly Stuff Podcast, which we ended with the 500th episode back in June. Purely Academic will release in the same podcast feed and YouTube channel as The Weekly Stuff, so if you are already subscribed, you’ll get the first episode as soon as it drops. If you haven’t subscribed yet, no time like the present! Subscribe on all podcast platforms including Apple Podcasts, or visit our YouTube channel and subscribe there!
A few quick notes on distribution: Purely Academic is a monthly show that will release the first Friday of every month. Think of it kind of like an ‘audio magazine’ – there will be a new issue at the same time every month, and they will be packed with a variety of conversations and content. With that in mind, full episodes will go up in one piece on the main podcast feed, to places like Apple Podcasts, but on the YouTube channel, we will be breaking each episode into its individual segments, so that listeners can jump straight to the parts of the show they’re most interested in. We think this better reflects the listening habits of those who listen in the podcast app, who probably want to listen to the whole thing over a longer period of time, versus those who subscribe on YouTube and might be more interested jumping straight to standalone segments (similar to how shows like The Daily Show or Saturday Night Live are broken up on YouTube). It’s an experiment, and we certainly welcome any feedback!
But that’s not all we have coming up! The season finale of Japanimation Station’s Kyoto Vacation – Season 4 of our anime-focused podcast, which has been going for the better part of a whole year now – is airing this Sunday night, September 1st, at 7:00 PM CT on YouTube. It’s a very fun episode where we reflect on all the amazing anime we’ve watched from the masters at Kyoto Animation; we create a tier list of all the shows and movies we’ve seen, create a KyoAni drinking game, and much more! And in the last 20 minutes, we reveal not one, but two new seasons of Japanimation Station: Season 5, which will begin this winter, and Season 6 coming later in 2025. What will they be about? You’ll have to listen to find out – but I’m pretty sure longtime listeners of Japanimation Station and Weekly Suit Gundam won’t be disappointed.
Before we go on hiatus to work on Season 5, we will have two more standalone episodes of Japanimation Station this September, both of which listeners have been asking us about: First, the return of Weekly Suit Gundam for a review of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, which releases on Netflix worldwide on September 1st. Second, a review of the ‘Hashira Training Arc’ of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which we didn't have time to review back when it aired earlier this summer.
So here's the schedule for the next few weeks in the Sean x Jonathan podcasting cinematic universe:
Sunday, September 1st – Japanimation Station’s Kyoto Vacation Season Finale
Friday, September 6th – The Premiere of Purely Academic
Sunday, September 8th – Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom Review! (on Japanimation Station)
Sunday, September 15th – Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Hashira Training Arc Review (on Japanimation Station)
And then we will be back for the October edition of Purely Academic on Friday, October 4th, while we get to work on Japanimation Station Season 5 in the meantime.
Lots of exciting stuff coming your way in the podcasting world, and we can’t wait to see you there. As always, stay subscribed here to Fade to Lack, at either the Free or Paid tiers, to keep track of everything we’re doing and be the first to know about what’s coming next!
